I saw a touch lamp in an aquaintance's appartment the other day, and I thought it was so cool that I have to have one.

Basically, it's a brushed metal floor lamp, with a metal "shade" upside-down on the top (looks like a funnel with light coming out the top). To turn on/off the lamp, all you had to do was touch anywhere that was metal on the lamp (meaning the whole thing: base, pole, shade, any part).

Looked all over the internet, can't find one that's simple brushed metal and 6 feet (ish) tall. Any help?

You have a Lamps Plus near you? That would probably be your best bet.

You could also try Wal-Mart, Target or Home Depot/Lowes.

If you see a lamp you like, buy it. You can then purchase a device that installs into the bulb socket to make it a lamp that is activated by touch.

Oh, and in regards to those people who say "it is so 80s" - they are probably living in a 1950s "retro" styled house. ;)

How's that work?

I hate to ask the obvious here but why didn't you ask the acquaintance where they got theirs from?

Because I don't really know them very well, and don't see them often

I think they're called Torchieres. I saw a bunch of them at Lowe's for $39 something or other... Brushed metal base and post with frosted glass shade.

You can get a socket-add-in that converts any lamp to a touch lamp... I don't know where, but I know I've seen them, for like $10-15 or so.

Basically when you touch a metal part of the lamp, the capaticance of the lamp changes, as your whole body is now part of the circuit - the socket can sense that change and turns the light on/off accordingly.

Edit: Doing a google search for touch lamps brings up about a bazillion hits. I found sockets, lamp switch converters, and touch lamps themselves. Even amazon used to sell a "touch lamp socket" but it has since been discontinued.
