Hey everyone I am planning on purchasing a remote start for my girlfriend for Christmas. She drives an '01 malibu. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as kits go or where to purchase one from? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

My car came with a remote start, I tested it maybe 2-3 times to see if it works. This is probably going to be a dumb question but:

When I remote start my car, do I just put my key into the ignition and turn it as if it was already on? I always have this feeling that something is not right, so I usually just turn off my car than I turn it back on again using the key.

Yes, put the key in and turn it to on.

Not to start, just all the way on to where the dashboard lights up.

Mine will ignore it if I turn the fob to start when it's already running.

My car actually displays "Insert key and turn to on" on the info center when I remote start it...

On mine, if you push the remote start button again while it's running, it will shut off.

So that's how I shut it off if I need to after I have remote started it.

And usually, if you press the brake pedal before inserting the key and turning it the car will stall. Theft prevention.

Yes, mine does that.

I think mine is for morons...

When you close the door it displays: INSERT KEY TURN TO ON

When you insert the key fob into the hole, the display changes to: TURN TO ON

It's like it's pleading with you... :D

Any other suggestions? I have a friend that can install it, don't really want to pay the fee for bestbuy to install it. And all the circuit citys around here just closed this past week.

Just go to any car audio shop and pick one, if you buy one online and take it to a shop they'll be pretty hesitant to install it since they're not familiar with it and probably wont give you any warranty.
Btw im pretty sure you'll need an additional module to bypass security on your malibu.

I just tested mine again today, here are the results:

It has a special lock function that unlocks the car and disables the security system in the car, that way you can get into it and don't have to worry about alarms or the engine shutting off.

When I put in my key and turn it as I would the ignition the starter makes a grinding sound. Lesson? Turn the key only so the displays powers up, not all the way like you would start your car.

I guess maybe my starter is different and more advanced, I don't know, either way, I don't think Id get one myself if my car diden't come with it, I really don't have any problems at all starting my car when it's cold, maybe starters are good for really old cars?

Yeah, my new Jeep essentially has push button start, which Jeep refers to as tip-start.

It doesn't use a key, just a fob that goes in a square hole.

You just bump it quickly and the engine starts itself. You don't hold it at start until the engine starts.

That's why it's able to ignore it if you try to start it while it's running.

I didn't even know it had an alarm in it until I saw the red light flashing on the dash one night and wondered what it was... :D
