Im thinking of getting a laptop so I can use it for school. I dont know if I should buy it at a computer store like CompUSA or thru DELL. I plan to pay monthly for the laptop. Where do you think is the best and cheapest way to get it. Any hot deals on laptops out there lately?

Also I want to get a CD-Burner for my desktop at least 12X speed, and also a Hard-drive at least 40GB 7200RPM. If anyone knows any deals or rebates please post them all on this thread, I would really appreciate it. THANKS

Just so you know this should be posted in the moderator sponspored I WANNA thread.

I would suggest buying a Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop, you just missed a great deal they had. They were offering a FREE 8x CD-RW upgrade on most of their laptops. Dell also offers financing so you can pay in monthly installments. If you have $1,300 there's a SUPER SWEET deal on an IBM ThinkPad T20.

I would recommend the Dell Factory Outlet. Do your research and look up all the options in the regular section then watch the inventory in the Outlet for a machine with the right features. Outlet machines are primarily units that were returned within the 30-day grace period. They are retested then wiped and reloaded for the Outlet. The machines carry the same warranties as new (varies by model)and you usually get the same service. The Outlet also has a monthly payment program.

The prices in the Outlet are at least 15% below the "new" machines and they run additional promotions every two weeks. Sometimes they discount the models with a lot of stock and other times they include freebies like a scanner or printer or specials on monitors.

The IBM Store on eBay has some good deals too but they don't have nearly the selection or payment flexibility.

You'll have to do your own homework for the other items. The forum is filled with deals for both CDRWs and disks -- search and read.

Conclusion as far as the actual hardware and drivers goes if you buy the OEM or the Retail Box it is identical.

Well, this is not always the case, unfortunately. For example, some OEM graphic cards will have less features (e.g. no TV out) and/or lower RAMDAC speed than their retail brethen.
