Where to buy a home gym?

I would like to get a home gym, since I've come to the obvious conclusion that my gym club membership is doing me no good.

Can anyone suggest a good place to buy a home gym? I'm planning on using it for general fitness.

I found a Smith machine/bench combo at Academy that looks pretty good for $199.

Places like play it again sports have good equipment, sometimes used and sometimes not. But it's going to cost more than $200 to get within the basic ballpark of gym quality equipment.

I got a two-station Weider gym from Dick's Sporting Goods (and, NO! their website isn't what you might think at first!!)

Seems it was about $299 or $399 new.

The one I was looking at is defintely not gym quality. But it certainly appeared to be more than enough for light home use.

And I'd have to buy weights as well (the machine doesn't have a weight stack with it), so I'd be looking at ~$300.

They are very expensive and for that price you can get a solid cage, olympic bar, adjustable bench, and stockpile of dumbells.

Yeah, the $199 package I'm looking at is a solid cage, olympic bar, and adjustable bench.

For $99 I'll add 300lbs of olympic weights.

But isn't it a lot smaller and lighter?

Just buy a bench, a bench press bar, 2 hand bars, maybe a curl bar, and some assorted weights. It's healthier and cheaper, just make sure to have a friend around if you're maxxing the bench presses (otherwise find a comfortable weight and go more reps).

buying used will give you the biggest bang for buck.

Sears sometimes has steals.

They had a $1000+ setup for $99 I wanted to buy but had nowhere to put it. I did a 'test' workout in the store and loved the machine. It wasn't as good as free weights but close....and I could always pick up some dumbbells and use them with the bench provided.

I really wish i had space for that deal.

One more addition.....

If you are looking for a solo workout and don't want to spring for the bowflex and the like....

Use dumbbells and rubber mat. You can always drop a dumbbell (just make sure they clear your feet ;) ).

Plus dumbbells I think are way better to train with than a bar.
