It's kinda funny actually. I ordered an item at Newegg.com. They send via FedEx Express Saver. I live like 5 minutes from their warehouse. The package got sent to the Los Angeles sort facility from their City of Industry location and then sent back to City of Industry and it got delivered to me. Gotta hand it to them for doing this within a 24 hour period tho.

LOL you read my mind, I was thinking scared turtle.
 
Most of the shipping algorithms require the packages to be sent to a centralized location. At least that's what my boss told me when I told him my brother's video card was sent from California to like Kentucky then to Washington. 😛 I guess in certain situations where it would be REALLY silly to send it all that way (such as kt's case) exceptions are made.
