Here's the quick story. There's this hot babe on my floor that I think has something for me. I saw her in the caf and she tells me to come to her room at a certain time because she has computer problems. Well I get there and there isn't really any problem, I think it was just an excuse to get me in there :D and talk about flirting, CHRIST!
Anyway, she's got like nothing on there to do her school work...it's a POS Macintosh...the old kind. It's running MacOS 7.5.1...I was looking around (even though I know hardly anything about Macs) and found out there's not even a word processor on there except for something called Claris 3.0 or something like that. The POS couldn't open anything...I asked her if she had any typed up files and she looked around and I found a few DOC files on a floppy and it couldn't do anything with them. So I said I'd look for some software....i mean there's gotta be at least a decent freeware/shareware word processor for a mac 7.5.1 out there right? Also tried the file sharing programs and had no luck.

help me help a hot chick in distress. ;)

oh yeah, and she wants to know if icq can work on it? the only one i could find was for 8.5 and higher so i guess not...same thing for AIM. then again, is there a 10/100 NIC out there that would even work in such a POS?

p.s. sorry thereds, no pics..................yet

Mac computers (at least the old PowerPC ones dont) dont use standard NIC cards.. they use Communication Cards which work in NUBus slots... check out THIS one

Hmm interesting..and i bet they cost a fortune too. Yep, just checked...$180!

I just found some freeware text editors but they look like crap.

Oh, and she had Internet Explorer 2.0 on there LOL! I actually remember that...man IE was so brutal back then.

it can run aim if you get a browser that supports Java on it - there is a java based aim client if you go to aol.com/aim

What's the model of the mac? All PowerPC models have on board ethernet. You may have to buy anAAUI adapter for 10 base T if it's a 6100, 7100, or 8100. All models after that have built-in 10BT.

So, not having any software makes a machine a POS? My PC didn't come with any...

For a free text editor, try BBEdit Lite. It works just fine.

Also, I believe Apple makes all OS 7.5.1 and lower available free for d/l from ftp.apple.com.

You can d/l software from www.download.com www.macdownload.com, or www.tucows.com.

my windows NT 4 cd installs IE 2.0 when you install it.. with IE 2 you can't even view microsoft's own homepage to download an update or service pack. so I had IE 5 on a cd, but it wouldn't install IE 5 without at least service pack 3.. well I cant download SP 3 with IE 2.. so what to do ? ended up digging out an old AOL cd with IE 3 on it, upgrading from 2 to 3, just so I could download the service pack so I could upgrade to 5.

anyway, off topic

It was 5100 something...so I guess it has nothing eh?

Another question...when I burn a CD, what format do I need to burn it so Macs can read it?

Lemme know the exact model number and I'll be happy to spec it out for you.

The 61,71 and 8100s were the first model PPCs. There were 4xxx and 5xxx models, but those are newer.

If its a 61, 71 or 81xx, ethernet is built-in you just have to buy a cheap adapter. If it's another kind of PowerMac (not necessarily Performa), you can use a Mac PCI Ethernet card (~$20).

Macs can read standard ISO CD-ROMs.

Maybe look into buying an old 8.5 cd from ebay or www.shrevesystems.com.

Wow, you must have an OLD version of NT. My version came with the NT option pack, which comes with Service Pack 3, IE 4.01, and IIS 4. IE 4.01 is kinda cool, because it comes with "Web Intergration" mode, which adds the Windows 98 front end to NT. Then, from there, you can upgrade to Service Pack 6 and IE 6.

Anyway, back on topic.... What kind of Mac is this? Since it's running 7.5.1, I'm assuming that it's either an old PowerMac or a Quadra. Either way, you would probably find an old copy of Microsoft Word to run on it. It's still pretty bad, but at least it can open .RTF and some older .DOC files.

FYI, Mac models 5400 and above either have on board ethernet or a PCI slot. If the computer is a 52xx or 53xx, you're screwed. The add in LC card cost more than the machine is worth...unless you can get it cheap from www.shrevesystems.com. They're a used Mac hardware store.

Oh, and by the way, fixing a young woman's computer usually won't get you a date, let alone any sexual favors. The only two exceptions are if the girl is:

1) Is a bit of a geek herself, and is already somewhat interested in you.
2) A slut.

Most likely, the girl will totally ignore your advances, and totally blow you off once her computer is fixed. Until then, she'll lead you on just long enough to waste your time on her technical problems. Perhaps she'll feign some interest again if she needs her computer fixed again, but trust me, it's not worth it. I used to work technical support at a big university, and I had a lot of friends who got burned this way.

Honestly, all of the 5xxx models were low end POS without much upgradabliity.

If you could find the exact Mac model number 5xxx that would really help out.

Almost all the instant messengers have Mac versions available just make sure to download the PowerPC (or PPC) version and not the 68k. Here is where you can download ICQ, AIM, and MSN are also available from their respective websites. Unfortunately all Mac versions of ICQ suck compared to the robust (bloated) versions of ICQ for Windows just so you know ahead of time, they really suck.

Once you find her Mac's specific model number you can lookup it's specs on EveryMac.com, she probably has a Mac Performa 5xxx something.

I'll PM you about the word processing application.
