where the HECK did my background go??

I can't figure this out! I'm running XP and I deleted a couple files off my desktop, but right when I did I lost my background and my desktop items! They're still there, because when I logon, logoff, or refresh my desktop my old stuff flashes in and then out. It's almost like the background color has forced itself forward, blocking the backgound. Active desktop is enabled, TweakXP's settings are all correct. Please help!
