Where should I buy a laptop? Dell, Gateway, etc...?

My friend is looking to buy a laptop, and since I've only worked with desktops really I'm not sure what to tell her.

She's looking to spend about $1400.

I personally liked IBM, mainly because of the trackpoint.

They are kinda expensive tho... but then again, what is cheap about a laptop?😎🙁

get a dell. if u can afford, the 3 year onsite warranty is kickass. if u skimp on the warranty, mail in service takes like at least two weeks from what i hear.

My preference are Toshiba, DEll, and if you got deep pockets IBM.

Avoid Sony, from my experience and according to PCWorld, Sony got the worse customer satisfactory ratings.

Dude, you're getting a Dell.
Just keep an eye on the deals, you'll find a good deal for the configuration you want in short order.

another vote for IBM. but in that price range, you may want to look into used machines. you can sometimes find machines on ebay or other places that still have a year or so left on their warranty, if that's an issue. dell is also ok too, but the IBMs are a notch above them.

Maybe it's changed but I sent in an Inspiron 8000 a little over a year ago and I got it back the same week I sent it. I couldn't believe how fast they "fixed" it. We won't get into the details of how they fixed it.

As for the original question, I recommend Dell.
