Where on the Athlon T-Bird do you apply heat sink compound

I have a question on this-----------I put some Radio Shack heat sink compound (Silicone Based ) between my Thunderbird 800 and the heatsink and it has done wonders ---temp came down 10 Degrees C. The question is on the CPU I avoided putting and on the diode thingys and the little metal gates that are exposed on the top of the chip. Does it matter if you put it on the whole CPU or just around the edges. I don't want to screw it up.Another thing ---the heat sink compund is SILICONE based ---does that matter? And what is the difference between Artic Silver and a cheapo Radio Shack Silicone base heat sink compound ? Is it just harder to get off if you want to remove the stuff from the CPU ??

just on the center raised green/blue/or purple portion. THat is the CPU core.

It isn't necessary to get Arctic Silver. But I do worry about using Silicon Based greases on duron/t-birds. They put out a lot of heat on a small contact surface that tends to dry out these greases in a short amount of time.

If you can, look at getting an aluminum or non-silicon based grease. If not, keep an eye on you temps.

Thanks for your reply. My temps with the silicone based paste are decent at 40 c and 44c with a load. Not bad.I was in the 50c idle to 60 c with a load before. I put a couple of case fans in today as well. I ordered some Artic Silver paste so I will re apply that when it arrives. I hope to drop it into the mid thirties if possible. Mobo temp is a pretty steady 28 c.

Thanks again

with the way temps are measured on Socket A chips, you'll probably only "read" a 2-4C drop, but actual core temp drop will probabl ybe 5-8C.

Anyone tried Shin Etsu G749 Thermal grease? Know if it is silicon based or what?

I received some with the CEK733092 fans I ordered from Taisol but never used the stuff. I just used the pad that came on the HS.
