Background: old roof = no leaks, new roof (3 weeks old) = leaks at chimney

I say it's the flashing, but the roofing company claims that it is the water is leaking into the chimney above the flashing and then coming back out under the flashing. To verify this, I went up to the chimney and re-mortared 90% of it, and re-tarred the chimney cap that was previously tarred. Yesterday was the first major rain since, and it leaked again.

The white in the third pic is the flashing, and it looks like it's running over top of it and then dumping out at the plank where it ends.

I called them and they will be out today or tomorrow to look at it, but they sitll insist it must be the chimney.

Did they somehow seal the flashing against the chimney? If they didn't, I could see water running down the chimney, behind the flashing, and then leaking through the roof.

Usually they at least caulk around the line where the chimney meets the flashing so it can't leak.

There is LOTS of caulk, which is why they are saying it's the chimney. The thing is, everything is sealed up tight. The first time I noticed the leak, they went up there and re-caulked every seam and it still happens.

Yep, it's the flashing. Don't give them any slack, it didn't leak before, now it does.
If necessary get up on the roof with a water hose while they are there and demonstrate the leak

I don't have any right now, but I can get them. They have their trim guy there now redoing all of our trim, so I may have him come up there with me and give me his opinion.

EDIT: No staggered flashing, they used single pieces for each side.

THAT is probably the problem. The sides should have step flashing as seen here

yeah something with they way they installed the flashing... i suspect a lot of companies take short cuts with the flashing work.
