where is this copy of win2k from?

While moving out last semester, i found a copy of win2k under my fridge. I have no idea where it came from, but I installed it on a machine and it asked for no Authentication code or registration of any kind. I'm assuming that it isn't cracked, as the cd tells me i need a license to use the software. Is it illegal to use this even though I had to agree to nothing when installing it? Also, any ideas where it came from? Software gnomes?
