Where is the RAID implemented?

I've noted that many motherboards have RAID capabilities but information on how the various RAID controllers are implemented on the board is scarce or nonexistant. Is there anyone that can say definitively which RAID implemetations have direct access to the Southbridge and which have to go through the PCI bus?

As far as I can tell,
RAID in chipset uses direct access to southbridge, while extra RAID chip uses PCI.
