Where is the Log in Vista?

My wife's HP Pavilion suddenly went long in the bootup. This was after Vista service pack 1.
She gets a windows screen and then black and finally the desktop shows up. I cleaned out every file not needed. I ran registry cleanup. I ran checks for viruses.
I tried to find .log files which I assumed would show me what was happening during boot.
I couldn't find any. Is there such a file that might tell me if there is an error condition causing this black screen?
What tool might I use to validate her hardware to see if there is a problem?
Thanks

it's called ntbtlog.txt

If you want to see the next boot, delete the file and Vista will make a new one on the next boot.

BillB2. The Vista Home(32) doesn't have the file you referenced useing SEARCH. Is it a secured file that I need to follow some path to find?
