otherwise you ask a friend who has access to student bookstore prices. Better yet, find a friend who goes to a school with an agreement with Microsoft. At my school, we can download a bunch of Microsoft software (WinXP Pro included) for free.

Barely legal and risky. Microsoft's EULA states that you can't re-sell copies of Windows individually; you have to bundle them with hardware. People get away with this by shipping you a random piece-o'-crap hardware with the disc, so that you're technically buying the hardware.

This is easy. Microsoft employee discount (ie. friend discount) = $25 for xp pro :) (its where I get mine)

MIT does it for free?!! bah...CMU makes us pay 10 bucks, but we can get as many copies as we want for $10 each. probably just go to the computer store with your ID card and they'll check you off and hand you a cd/license :D

I've had to buy from these guys before. Not sure if it's the cheapest, but I think it's close to the best bet if can't use the other suggestions listed above. Direct Deals

Lots of schools belong to the Microsoft Academic Alliance. Many MS products are free - cheap, I got W2K server, SQL Server, Visual Studio, Project, Visio all free at University of St. Thomas (Minnesota)
