where is my sound card problem coming from?

I have a Hercules Game Theater XP sound card. It is an internal sound card that mounts via PCI on my motherboard. A serial cable connects the sound card to an external box. Recently I have been having trouble getting any sound from my this external box. After a few days of struggling with reinstalling i finally got some sound from this external box. I only got sound from the front channels, so there was no bass at all...and quite a bit of static. My headphone plugs didn't work and neither did the USB ports that it has on this external box.

I figured the external box had blown or something had fried. I purchased a new external box on e-bay and much to my dismay and dissapointment it does the SAME EXACT THING! So i feel like I should assume at this point that it's actually the internal card that has the problem.

I wasn't really sure how these combo sound cards work or if anyone can confirm that it is probably the internal sound card. My last ditch effort is to try to reinstall the drivers because i'm not 100% sure i've done it correctly the first time.

Does anyone think that it's my internal sound card that is messed up? Is this where the sound processing usually occurs? Thanks for any help.

Sorry, I don't know about that brand at all. Hate to crap on your thread, but this kind of stuff is why I only use Creative sound cards.
