Where is my problem with Windows Install coming from?

Was getting lots of blue screens with various messages after trying out system internals pagedefrag program to defrag system files.

I have since attempted to re-install windows..
I have formatted the disk.. written zeros to it, etc.. and I keep getting stopped on the install.

Most recentluy.. error was related to cdfs file system.

cdfs.sys -Address F75SEC490 base at F75E7000, date stamp 3d6de24a

Never had a cdfs error message before.. could this be related to my Plextor DVD drive?

Specs:
AMD X2 4800
ABIT AT8 32X motherboard
AMD/Ati Sapphire Radeon 1900XT
Corsair PC4000 2X1 GB slots 1 and 2
Seasonic M-12 700 PSU
Akasa Eclipse case

Thanks for any ideas,

Mike

cdfs.sys is a pretty mature driver. If you are having problems then it's probably:

1. Hardware problem mebe, mebe not.
2. A filter driver.
3. Something completely unrelated that is misbehaving and clobbering cdfs.sys in memory. You could load one of your memory dumps into a debugger and it should tell you right away if you have pool corruption (an indication that this #3 is a possibility).

Check for firmware updates for the Plextor. Uninstall any CD burning software you are using. Run like that for a while and see what happens.

Thanks Smiln! I have been unable to load windows and.. usually when I reset BIOS I get January 2006, but this time.. on own.. system got reset to January 2000. Memory shown in BIOS is less than actual, as well and boot order got changed too.. RMA motherboard??

This last paragraph may have a bearing on the problem:

"The process CD-ROM File System Driver belongs to the software Microsoft® Windows® Operating System by Microsoft Corporation (www.microsoft.com).

"Description: File Cdfs.sys is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32\drivers. Known file sizes on Windows XP are 63744 bytes (88% of all occurrence), 59648 bytes, 62208 bytes.
The driver can be started or stopped from Services in the Control Panel or by other programs. It is a Windows core system file. The program has no visible window. The service has no detailed description. File Cdfs.sys is a trustworthy file from Microsoft. Therefore the technical security rating is 2% dangerous.

"Important: Some malware camouflage themselves as Cdfs.sys, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. Thus check the Cdfs.sys process on your pc whether it is pest. We recommend Security Task Manager for verifying your computer's security. It is one of the Top Download Picks of 2005 of The Washington Post and PC World."

Thanks for the input so far.

In regards to my abit motherboard.. had a small board fire a few months ago. had board repaired at Abit in Fremont, CA.. and. the way the board BIOS reset themselves.. and system crashes with NO overclocking of any kind.. every week or two.. is troublesome.
