You need to install the kernel source rpm.

EDIT: .....for the kernel which is currently installed.

i go to /usr/src and i have one directory: RPM, i open that and it has

BUILD, RPMS, SOURCES, SPECS, SRPMS

but they are all empty...is there anywhere i can find how to build the kernel? im reading throught the linux manual from mandrake right now, but any additional tips would be appreciated. sorry, never my first time using linux.

TIP1: know your hardware configuration. (IDE controller, AGP controller-all that fun stuff)
TIP2: the README included with the kernel source + TIP1 is all that you'll need. Ignore the instructions from Mandrake as far as building a kernel, they're trash.

Downlaod the source from one of the mirrors listed at http://www.kernel.org/
