Where is my harddrive space going

Just installed windows vista ultimate yesterday, and since then I have installed Command and Conquer 3, Nero 7, and a couple small programs, drivers etc... Vista installation was 9 gbs, C&C 3 was 6gb, and Nero was 1gb, there should only be 16-17 gbs used on that drive; however, vista is reporting 42 gbs has been used... so what happened to the other 25 gbs my drive should have available?

System restore points and shadow copy is taking up some of that space, I saw the same thing for the first couple weeks then it started to level off.

Drive is 250gb, could system restore be the issue? I was reading that it can eat up to 15% of the drive... if I turn it off will that reclaim the space?

You can either turn it off entirely, or use Disk Cleanup to delete all but the most recent restore point.

I also have a 250GB drive and my System Volume Information folder (where System Restore files are stored) is about 33GB. I do wish you could control the amount of storage that SR uses, like you could do in XP. But for now I'll live with it.

Anyone knows if Vista indexing takes a close to fixed percentage (as a rough estimate) of storage, or is there any other way to predict its storage needs?

Hmm I seem to be unable to access information in the system volume information, system properties claims there is nothing in the folder.

you can also adjust the total amount of space that shadow copies and restore points take. the setting is available only on the commandline, but it shouldn't be hard to google it.

Yeah - Shadow Storage takes up a big pile of storage space, and SR adds to that. Go here . . . it works. I set mine to 4 GB.

Fixed.
