Where is licence info kept?

I have an app that is causing problems and the vendor has sent me a new serial number and told me to reinstall. I have uninstalled the old version and manually removed any registry entries but each time I reinstall it picks up the old serial number.

Can anybody advise as to where this info is kept? I am at my whits end!

Depends on the app. No universal answer. I suggest grabbing filemon and check out what files are being accessed.

When you uninstall, you should do a few things. One would be to make a copy of any data files you created or need to save that were made by the program. Next after you uninstall, delete all the Reg Keys and Folders associated with that app. That includes any in C:\My Docs ..Also, on most programs, there is an option to enter the License or Key Code, even if the program is already Licensed. On some others, it wil be grayed out and you can not enter a new key easily. The program Name would be a big help, so we can do further research on the issue.

Most of the time registration is done from the help menu on the command bar that runs across the top of the screen. Most programs have a registration or info selection that allows you to see/alter this information. Some programs require you to install them to register them. It all depends on the application. You can use process monitor to trace a program's activity and output it into a log file. That works extremely well for zeroing in on registration keys.
