how bright?

https://www.jameco.com/Jameco/Products/ProdCT/p030.pdf

it's a pdf page from their catalog. go to jameco.com and look for the part number if you are "interested" but there is a min ordering price, or you get hit with a fee.

here are some from eled.com

http://www.eled.com/product.asp?catalog_name=LEDs&category_name=&product_id=E53SEC-H
http://www.eled.com/product.asp?catalog_name=LEDs&category_name=&product_id=E7113SEC-H

those 2 are 10000mcd

i'd go with eled.com btw... but i dont know how their service is. my first order from them (some keychain LED lights) will arrive tomorrow.

I doubt it's what you want to spend, but it just doesn't get much brighter than this (and I would know). Visible for at least 1/2 mile in noon sunlight. :D

I just got in my LEDs today (one blue, one red) from case-mod.com. I'm pretty happy with the brightness of both. The red one is brighter though... 3500MCD (MCD = millicandela = 1/1000th of a candela = supposed brightness of a single candle) compared to 1500MCD for the blue one. If I have the lights off, either one will illuminate a fair-sized area on the opposite wall of my room. They're plenty bright for me, esp. at 60 cents for the red one (sale might not still be going on).

edit: the 10000MCD ones listed above appear to be 5.9mm in diameter. The ones I talked about are 3mm in diameter and this appears to be the size for most computer-related LEDs.

I yanked one out of a busted Logitech optical mouse. One of our ferrets, George (the closer one in the pic), chewed on the mouse wheel, so I didn't feel bad gutting the mouse. MAN it's bright... no where near 10,000 mcd, though :)
