I haven't been able to find a definitave resource on the web, so I figured I'd throw it out there to the diverse AT crowd

I live in the state of VT, which I hear statistically averages 2-3rd highest in the country (we have 2nd lowest population). And I'm right next to NH which is always 1st since thay have no other taxes. I have heard local VTers characterize their taxes as "I pay 300 bucks rent a month to the town." Makes buying property for the long haul not seem good without a good source of income.

I was wondering where the opposite places are in this country. I've heard that down south in some states taxes are very low and non-existant for old people. Is this true? Are there any places where there are no property taxes for the young?

The Fairbanks North Star Borough is working on a plan to eliminate property taxes and replace them with a sales tax.

So, how would you feel about living in interior Alaska? 😛

I hear Alaska is beautiful. I can't wait for the temp to drop below 40 here in VT. I love the cold. 🙂
 
You can't look at just property taxes. Most states with low property taxes have high income and sales taxes. Make sure you look at the whole picture.

That being said, the states with the lowest property taxes are Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.

You need to also find out what the sales tax is in that area. Paying little or no property tax while getting shafted on sales tax doesn't do you any good.

That's what I was thinking too. There are exceptions--e.g. South Carolina.

Probably down south. As long as you can put up with crumbling infrastructure, crappy schools, and zero jobs. If you're the entrepreneurial type, I hear NASCAR apparel and moon pies are quite the hot commodity down there.

Quit watching the Dukes of Hazard reruns. We also don't have too much about terror attacks or traffic. I also like the clean air and water, but that's just me.

Seriously though, crumbling infrastructure, etc, is a problem of urban areas, whether it's N, S, E, or W. The "South" is now a strong influence on the USA.

Actually, I have a friend who just moved down to Arkansas outside of little rock and can't stand the traffic. His 20 minute commute takes him over an hour during rush hour most days.

I realize there are other taxes out there. It's a matter of principal and philosophy for me. I prefer to have freedom and actual rights of ownership of the things I pay for. I understand my neighbors want me to help fund the school, I just hate that I don't have a choice but to. To me, I should get a choice if I want to pay property taxes or not, and if I opt out, take a penalty, like if I do have kids I want in the local school, pay extra for them to go. I am much more in favor of higher consumption taxes. We could use some higher ones in VT.

Why focus on that exclusively? You need to look at the total tax bite from all sources to make a valid decision IMO. A lot of info here.

Okay, some places do have quite a bit of traffic. I live in west Florida and the traffic here is decent.

Not only that, but you got to look at the average property value as well. I rather be paying 2% on a $100K home than 1% on a $500K home.
 
my property taxes are low

but the roads suck and the school can't even fix the 30 year old track
so you get what you pay for to some extent

i would vote for higher taxes to get paved roads and better school infrastructure
 
I mentioned in another thread that living in the footprint of the largest shopping mall in the US (in terms of retail space) allows me to enjoy very low property/school taxes.

$561 a year here in Dyer TN for 1 2/5ths of an acre and a story and a half house that is 2700 sqft big and not in shambles.
