Sam Harris detests Trump for the same reasons I do-

"Honestly, thus far, that [the casualty of truth] is the most harmful aspect of his presidency. Just the complete ruination of any standard of honesty in political discourse and it's astonishing to me. I have not yet accepted that this is even possible, much less actual. I don't think I'm alone, but I'm continually having the bewildering experience that I just cannot believe that this person is president. It is all focused on this particular aspect of his presidency, where he lies more than any person has ever lied in human history and not only does he get away with it, his supporters seem to delight in his running roughshod over any expectation that a public figure would be honest. It's not a bug, it's a feature for them and that's really disturbing. He has enough people that support him for whom the lying is not actually a problem, it's a technique. It's a kind of naked declaration of power, where he doesn't have to observe your expectations about what is logical or coherent or responsive to facts. He can just say what he wants, because it's the impression he wants to leave with you. He wants a certain language in the air and he just puts it there.

But all lying is just destructive of the social fabric, even so called white lies undermine trust, they undermine relationships, they destroy reputations — that is in a context where people care about the truth. But what's amazing now, we seem to be in some kind of freefall with respect to this and so many people do not care if you are caught lying. And Donald Trump seems to have rewritten the rules.

Am I not supposed to laugh at something that's so wrong it's hilarious? Taj, SlowSpyder, IJTSSG etc are in no way, shape or form polite. Like it or not, they are the conservatives that are active here, at least since I began posting which admittedly is pretty recently.

Most conservatives haven't been civil since Gingrich showed them the way back in 1994. The astroturfed Tea Party movement made it worse. And Trump? He is in no way civil & they adore him for it.

GOPers and double standards, name a more iconic duo. Reminds me of Cruz calling for civility in politics one day after implying O'Rourke should be jailed in the same cell as Hillary, or something along those lines, during a rally.

Fair enough. I'm sure there are there is no shortage of posters that lack tact or just don't give a shit. I guess I just have a pet peeve of one liner or one word replies that don't add anything of value.

That's fair.

I actually chuckled in real life when I read that post, hence the lol.

It all kinda went to Hell when Trump talked about his junk during a nationally televised debate, didn't it? It's gone downhill from there, sad to say.

How anybody can defend Trump & call for civility at the same time boggles the mind.

What benefit does anybody not leaning to the left receive from partaking in discussion on this board?
It depends on what you mean by benefit. Tangible benefits? Posting here won't grow your portfolio, improve your health, mow your lawn, or give you whiter whites and brighter brights.

What if might do is provide information and intellectual stimulation... if we could sustain productive discussion. Unfortunately, there are too many here dedicated to disrupting good discussion. There are still great tidbits here and there, but it takes work to find them.

Sure, polite is a relative term and this forum certainly isn't that. But of those mentioned I haven't seen them treat with others with obvious malice - and when they do lash out they seem to take some time to get to that level. Unlike, say:

Trump is your president you fucking dipshit, what are you talking about?

Not exactly what I said, and note the operative term rarely, but I look at places like this as a chance to hone my ability. Conversing with the Sam Harris equivalents of the world requires a very different skill-set than Anita Sarkeesian equivalents, much less a mob of them. Which isn't to say that I'm the former or that this forum is the later - but it's certainly closer to the later (and people nearer the former by and large don't suffer existing as part of an echo chamber). And hell, I'll admit it, sometimes punching down can be fun.

That said, I also often don't see eye to eye with the conservative wing, such as the current 14th amendment debate, but by and large I respect them so much more than I do the liberals here. Both because they tend to be polite while everyone around them acts like raging spoiled children, and because they've decided to insert themselves into an uphill battle versus a liberal majority. That at least is worthy of something, and the corollary is also true.

I really hope you are like 15.

You're either lying or you haven't viewed enough threads.

As for myself, I never claimed to be polite. I have repeatedly said though that I give everyone a fair chance initially. But if you show yourself to be an idiot or an asshole, I'll treat like you one.

Perhaps. I'm not the most active poster or even lurker. That said, I don't trust you guys to be free of confirmation bias even a little bit.

You took the time to go through my post history, why don't you do the same with theirs to see for yourself? After all, you are the unbiased one here and double standards are a no-no, correct?

You made that post a few pages back. And yes, I did look at Taj's and Spyder's history a bit to make sure I wasn't mistaken. If there's anything egregious, it must be further back.

And of course I'm not completely neutral and unbiased, but I can say with a straight face that I make an effort. You and your type can't, or at least shouldn't. To put it simply, if you're participating in an echo chamber and you don't feel uncomfortable with that situation, then you aren't even trying to control your biases - you're relishing in them - and that's obvious to anyone who doesn't have that specific defect. You can only argue that you aren't in an echo chamber, somewhat difficult in a thread titled Where have our conservative members gone, or that you aren't so comfortable here as you seem to appear.
