If I didn't have long hair I would wear a fedora around if I was trying to look nice. Having long hair I do look rather foolish in hats.

And, long hair > hats.
Indeed, although fedoras are pretty damn pimp.
Yeah just ask Micheal Jackson
MJ doesn't count. He makes having a nose look bad.
What other contemporary figure is there that's known for wearing Fedoras?
Well, there is the archetypal pimp. Plus fedoras seem to be in vogue now with other black entertainers who are not freakishly deformed child molesters.

Yeah but Pimps look ridiculous, not cool.

True, but if they left the bright suits at home and just stuck with the fedora they would be much less ridiculous looking.

It was automobiles that killed "The Hat".

As roof lines lowered people could no longer wear hats while driving and the hat kind of just went away....

Jones wore a leather fedora IIRC. I doubt anyone would connect a black felt fedora with Indy; it's more likely that they'd connect it with Bogart.

I'm not entirely sure that I buy that one either. I'm 6'0" and I can wear my fedora in either of my cars without a problem. Same goes for my casual leather "cowboy" hat.

Cars were the undoing of large hats, because they couldn't fit in the cab. This is also part of the reason that cars are the new social status symbol.

Reminds me of a joke.

Why do cowboys roll up the sides of their hats?

So they can ride three in a pickup.

Fashion and culture killed off the hat, not cars or Kennedy. Rules of ettiquette relaxed considerably, women began participating in sports and entering the workplace, two world wars left an impact. During war time people had to rush to bomb shelters and don gas masks, or wear helmets.

Hats simply became impractical to modern men and women.

No, when I look at pictures of my parents and grandparents, all the men are wearing hats and I also think it was cool. I've always hoped it would come back, but it doesn't look like dressing nice will ever be in vogue any more.

Men wearing hats was great when men dressed themselves properly. Notice the suiting was well-cut and fitted properly during your grandfather's era. Now, men dress like slobs with overly baggy clothing.

It's better to feel good than to look good.

Form should follow function, so what would be the point of a hat? That goes for today's caps as well. I see people wearing caps indoors while it's 90 degrees... WTF? My generation never wore hats unless there was a reason to. Can't say the same for the generations before or after though.
