Whatever happened to the good old days when everyone wore hats like this?

... or, am I the only one that thinks hats from the 1920's to 1940's kick ass?

The hats declined with the depression--------just a theory
I guess the hats couldn't keep up with the fasion or maybe baby boomers didn't want to wear the hats that made them remember about WWII or the depression?

I'm guessing the decline of hats also has to do with the improvements in hygiene... either way, it's a real shame.

i love the fourties... i find that era very fasinating... the war, the music, the way of living, the clothing. Hats were worn because everyone was always very formal and proper.

I think that it too bad that some sort of formality is gone. Women were women and men were men.

I think I was born in the wrong decade... unfortunately, there weren't too many computers in the 1940's. Sigh.

Most people actually blame it on Kennedy's not wearing a hat to his innauguration (sp?). It's simply a style and they aren't all that in fashion anymore.

Personally though, I love my fedora. :)

There was an NPR show on this recently.

Cars were the undoing of large hats, because they couldn't fit in the cab. This is also part of the reason that cars are the new social status symbol.

It's funny that you should mention that, because Kennedy actually wore hats quite frequently, according to the NPR show. He didn't wear one to his innauguration, but his dad did, and "tipped" it to him after his speach.

baseball caps are very common nowadays.

Much easier to keep clean, and if you take it off, much easier to store,
heck you can stuff one inside your shirt,or if its soft, into a pocket.

:)

Easy to personalize too, root for the home team, what kind of car/truck/tractor
baseball team,football team,etc you like.

If I didn't have long hair I would wear a fedora around if I was trying to look nice. Having long hair I do look rather foolish in hats.

Yeah I often wonder this too...fedoras are pretty slick. But I'd get called Indiana Jones all day long if I started wearing one.

My hometown of Norwalk, CT was a hatting town back then. The economy of the city relied on the hatting industry very heavily.

I can recall that signs directed at salemen were placed in offices. The sign read, "If you expect to sell, wear a hat".

What other contemporary figure is there that's known for wearing Fedoras?
