Id love to buy one of these retail box 1ghz processors, but nobody has them anywhere. Does anyone know what the problem is, or when they will become available ?

Traditionally AMD has always sold like like 99% or something of their CPU's as OEN one's.

Actually the vast majority of AMD CPUs being sold at the retail level are OEM CPUs.

Anyway buying a boxed CPU useally means paying more money for the same product, anyway.

Im not sure about that. Buy.com has got the processor (when available) for 221.00 - 30 rebate or $191. I comes with a heatsink/fan combo and a 3 year warranty from AMD.

You correct me if im wrong, but I don't see that it is any more expensive to buy retail, and it might even be cheaper depending on the chosen heatsink/fan. Are there other reasons I should be purchasing OEM over a retail box ?

OEM comes with no fan and a 3month warrenty or something like that. If your cpu works for 3months it will most likely work for 5 years. And if you buy OEM, you get to chose your own heat sink fan like that if you want to overclock and stuff. Retial comes with a sticker, so if a 3 year warrenty, the AMD sticker, and you don't plan on overclocking, then get retail. If not get OEM.

Either way you can't go wrong.

OEM warranty is 14 days.
Anything more is a warranty covered by the store you bought it from.
Personally, I would dish out the extra cash for the 3 year warranty.
Can you imagine what CPU you would get as a replacement if your 1GHz Athlon died in 35 months time?
... same with the two PII-350s I have that have a 3 year warranty. since the slowest available now is what, a PIII-700 ?

Most companies keep a stock to replace returned parts. There not going to send you a P3-700 if your 350 dies. I had my Abit BH6 v1.01 replaced, how long did they make the .01 rev... not long. Almost 3 years after I got the mobo they had a nice new 1.01 sent back to me as replacement.

Try Computer Builder's Warehouse-they had the retail 1.0 gig T-bird in stock last week (when I checked) for $185 plus s/h. Resellerratings is decent, I've never dealt with these people before.

I agree-the retail, esp. at this price, is a no-brainer decision. Why risk cracking your cpu installing another heatsink, pay more for an OEM cpu plus heatsink plus fan with negligible warranty than you do for retail? I figure if I ever do overclock it, it will be when the cpu is old & I can replace the heatsink/fan then if need be.
