where has my space gone?

when i right click on my hard drive and view its properties, over 50gb of data is being used

when i open my hard drive and select all (i am viewing hidden files and folders and protected system files and folders), it only amounts to something like 20gb

i defragged the hard drive even though it didnt really need it

any ideas? 🙁
 
nah i emptied the recycle bin it only had like 1gb. and no multiple paritions. admin tools -> disk management only shows one partition using all the space on the drive
 
Try deleting the restore points from Windows Restore.

Those can gobble up space like there's no tomorrow if you are not careful.

To do so, go to Start>Programs>Accesories>System Tools>Free Hard Disk Space. Then click on the advanced tab and click on 'Remove all but the most recent restore point'.

The winner.

Properties of the drive or other disk viewing programs will not show space consumed in the "system volume information" folder since your logged on account does not have access by default. You can manually go fool with it but it's not the greatest idea (you don't have permissions for a reason).
