Where Does the Word "Bulkhead" Come From?

Bulkheads are commonly used to shore up a deeply sloping area of land to control spillover and erosion. Deep basement egress often needs a filled concrete bulkhead with drain to prevent mudslides from entering through the egressway.

And yes, of course bulkheads are on ships.

i imagine that since they had a reason for calling the bathroom on a ship the "head".... that the bulkhead is a place where the reason for calling the bathrooms "head" becomes more apparent?

bulkhead, used in cranberry marshes, were the water is controlled, like a control culvert on a dike usually made of cement, but can be metal, reduces erorsion
