Where does the term "crabby" come from?

When someone is in an irritable mood, you might say that person is "crabby". But where does that come from? Are crabs very irritable creatures or something? I have not had much (any?) interaction with crabs so I'm not very familiar with their personality.

What do crabs do, they snap at things with their claws. If a person "snaps" at people verbally, they are being crabby.
