I am using a Plextor model PXW1610A CD-R in an Athlon system with 768MB ram running under Win-XP Home Edition. Frequently the CD-R simply disppears. It does not appear in My Computer, Windows Explorer and is not recognized by my backup software. If I reboot, it normally magically reappears. Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Thanks! :confused:

I've got a Plextor12x10x32 and lately it's been doing the same thing. Sometimes it'll be there when I boot ... sometimes not. Sometimes it take one warm reboot. Sometimes three warm reboots, sometimes one cold reboot. It's never the same. I've tried everything to fix it, it's even got the 2nd ide all to itself.

It's been driving me nuts. I wonder if it's something to do with Plextor+WinXP? I never had this problem in Win 98. I have absolutely nothing in common with your system except those two things.

The drive still works like a charm though. Best damn $99 I ever gave Compusa.

Never had that problem with my 16X Plextor ... still don't have them with my 40X Plextor. Maybe it's time for a clean install???

After totally screwing-up my system "tweaking" Win-XP I did a clean install approx. 45 days ago and everything else works great! I'm much more careful with tweaking now. Anyway, I just downloaded the lates Plextor firmware upgrade (released 4/02) and will report if it solves this problem. Thanks for your comments. Other suggestions are welcome.

My Plextor SCSI drives would do that if I did a warm reboot, either cnt-al-delete at DOS prompt or reset if I locked up. Power it down and let everything reset and it'd be fine. Think I've seen that with other drives too, though I can't be sure.

I upgraded the Plextor firmware and rebooted. The Plextor drive was no where to be found. I then had the bright idea to use the Win-XP add hardware feature and in only a few seconds the CD-R was found and reinstalled. I'm interested to see if this problem pops up again. Thanks.

Here's what it might be. There are some settings in the registry that you may need to delete. This is usually an adaptec problem here they are.
HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE, SYSTEM, CurrentControlSet, Control, Class, {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Look for Lower Filters and Upper Filters Delete them both and your drives will come back after a reboot if this is the cause. Do a search on Google and you will see that I am not trying to trick you or anything.

Drylock. . . Thanks for the info. If the reinstall mentioned above does not hold, I will do the Registry surgery. I'm a little hesitant to tamper with the Registry unless I absolutey have to - just call me squemish! Thanks again.
