Where does iTunes store play counts??

I've had to reformat a couple times now and every time I do I lost all my play count data...is there any way to save this? I assume it stores play count data for songs in your library somewhere, I just don't know where.
 
If you copy the entire iTunes library it should get the playcounts as well as your playlists and everything else.
