Where does bone fragment go when it breaks off inside of you ?

I went to the doctor about a problem I have been having with my ankle.

The X-Rays showed some loose bone fragment that had broken off from a bike accident I had.

The doctor told me not too worry about it, and that it could be anothe 3-4 weeks before it is healed.

I forgot to ask him what happens to the fragment.

Anyone know ?

It stays there...sometimes you need to have them removed if they irritate you, just like when athletes have bone spurs removed.

Does it work like that ? The bone fragments re-attach ?

I don't think so! it probably gets disolved/absorbed or needs to be removed.

dissolved ? I thought bone was too tough to dissolve by the natural elements in my body.

absorbed ? by what ?

removed .... that would suck :-(

Hey if I was a doctor I'd be making the doctor bucks. I dunno. I'm sure that in enough years a bone would get slowly disolved *shrug*.

Actually, the "fragmen" are the characters from UT2K3. After they get finished fragging you on the screen, the sneak out of the harddrive at night, after everyone's fallen asleep. They enter your body thru your nostrils and work their way thru your system, fragging things as they go along.

You're toast, dude.

No, your osteoclasts will dissolve the bone. Contrary to popular belief, your bones never stay the same. They are constantly being broken down and rebuilt. Osteoblasts build new bone, and osteoclasts break it down.

Thanks for the insight.

Bone is constantly replaced and remodelled - it is not a static tissue.

In the event of a break which sets, slightly mis-aligned, with a 'step' at the break - in time, it will gradually remodel into a smooth bone (although it may not be quite straight).

If there are bone fragments, if they are not significantly displaced from the site of the fracture, and the area of bone is under stress (which promotes remodelling) the chances are that it will simply join up again. This doesn't always happen, especially where the fragment is not under much stress - e.g. if you badly twist your ankle and a small flake gets pulled off the bone, it may not join up - it will just stay there, although with time it will become rounded off.

Something similar happened to me 2 weeks ago. A ligament in my pinky finger pulled away from the bone and took a piece of bone with it. I get to take off the splint in a few days. I hope the healing process went ok.

that depends on how it breaks.

I broke my wrist when I was 15. In my late 40's I injured my wrist and it required surgery. The fragment got removed while they were in there.

Since skin cells can't get rid of tattoos until they're smashed into tiny bits by a laser I think that a bone fragment may be too big to be removed by the surrounding tissue.

I think they just kinda stay there and your flesh heals and forms around it and it's basically like a bunch of fragments stuck in jello. If over time they irritate you because of sharp edges they can probably go in and remove. If they are close enough to the bone they might also reattach.

Not sure if they would get absorbed by the body. If they did, then your body would just absorb all your bones and then you would have no more bones. I imagine the immune system or whatever is responsible for absorbing things knows not to touch bone.

Then again I'm not a doctor so I'm just basing this on my 0 years of biology class. I should look at becoming one though. "Dr. Squirrel, MD" has a nice ring to it.
