Where does Altec Lansing fit into the general scheme of things?

I don't consider them state of the art or anything like that, but how would you rate them in general?

Back in the day(~5 years ago) the ACS-45s were good. I still use a pair for another computer.

Above average... i don't think they're for gamers though. Since most gamers want basssssss... but i don't think these guy specialize in PC speakers though... they're quite innovative back in the day. :)

You must be kidding.
AL's are better quality (and better construction) than Logitechs and even Creatives.

If you want to use food as an analogy, they're much more than a fast food restaurant.
Maybe something like Uno's or Friday's. Better food that will cost you a little more, but still affordable.

The cheesy OEM stereo sound Juster's are more like McDonald's.

IMO:
Klipsch >>> Altec > Boston, Creative, Logitech >>> ....

I think AL is more concerned with accuracy rather than blowing up your room with bass like the Logitechs... :D

I have a set of those right now on my computer and they're great. Got them years ago with our family's old Pentium 200 system and their still kicking strong.

Altec Lansing makes decent speakers. They are excellent/more than enough for casual users...

What about their ADA ones that Dell used to and still sells? I've never seen reviews on those and never seen peopel compare them to Z-560's or Z-680's.

I had ADA880's and sold them for ADA885's.
The 880's had more bass than the 885's that replaced them (and actually sounded better too), but the lack of "quad mode" for gaming (the 880's did not support 3D sound for gaming; the rears were for dolby digital or stereo x2 which reproduced the front sound).

But to compare the 885's to Z560's (which I also currently own), I'd give a slight edge to the Z560's.
Z560's are definitely louder and have more bass (brute force), but aren't as refined.
ADA885's have crisper high's and mids.
