I have a Asus EAH4850 1GB and plays games decently to my standards. I am usually playing Madden NFL on console (360) anyways and use PC for FPS.

Wondering if I need a upgrade or I am still getting decent performance.

What do you guys use to determine whether your video card is outdated anyways? Is it FPS? If yes, what do you consider good fps? And fps where you think a GPU should be upgraded?

Thanks

you upgrade when you can justify the cost of the upgrade. that's something only you can determine, and applies whether you have a piece of shit, or the second best computer in the world...

No profanity in the technical forums please...

I share the same thoughts, but at the same time I really don't know what I should be looking at. Whether it is the my GPU that is bad or the game is a POS itself. Thats all. I am unfamiliar with PC gaming, only been doing it for 1 year.

Awesome advice, I think a comment like that should be stickied in every section.

I guess it would help others if you state your full system specs. The resolution you play in and also the games you like to play.

Yeah that. In the grand scale of things i would say the 4850 is mid range and still capable.

OP, instead of comparing your card with what others have, I suggest you see if it performs adequately in the games you play. If you can live with it, then keep it. Otherwise, you have tons of options right now. The thing is, jumping to a card like a GTX 460 isn't going to be as big of an upgrade as it is for other people.

This!

Change your monitor first and check how the games perform at 1920/1080. If you find any of them unplayable, a 460 1GB, although not a big upgrade, might rectify that.

I went from 2x4870@512mb to a 6950 and still can't see much of an improvement. I have better frames of course, but everything I play was going maxed out on the crossfire combo I had before also( except for Warhead, which I'm probably not going to play again anyway). Bottom line, I only ended up spending money for the itch.

A 4850 is going to struggle at 1920x1080 if you want smooth frame rates with all the AA and AF eyecandy switched on.
I had one which ran my 1680 x1050 20inch TN panel very well but after upgrading to the Dell U2410 it was noticeably struggling.
An upgrade to an HD5850 did the trick and it runs beautifully now.
I'd suggest an HD6950 2GB for your upgrade.

I went from a 512mb Radeon 4850 to a 460 1gb (both oc'd).

I was *SHOCKED* to see the performance inprovement in DX10/DX11 titles and I don't even game at high resolitions. If you play newer titles you owe it to yourself to upgrade.

The improvement is massive.

I did as well. I game at 1680 x 1050 and did not notice a significant increase at all. I just added 2x AA now *shrug*

For fps I turn my settings to the lowest settings and play in 1680x1050 to make the games a bit more clear without having to deal with trees, explosions, and smoke blocking my view.
4850 will work fine for that. Id wait and upgrade after you burn out your video card as I always seem to do.

Did you OC the 460? Play Metro 2033, your frames should have almost doubled as mine did.

Well the above technique does work-why not go further and just break it down into wire frame objects without any colour or textures. FFS if you're getting rid of smoke, trees and explosions then there doesn't seem much point in gaming at all.

I just replaced a 512mb 4850 with a 5870 and noticed a very nice boost in performance. However, the 4850 still performed reasonably at 1080p for most games.

I have a 4850, but the 512 meg model. When the GTX 460s get below the $100 price mark, that is when I will be upgrading.

Or, when the GTX 480s get in the $150 price range or less, that is what I am going to upgrade to.

Personally, I think the 4850 is a solid card that will probably give good service for another year.

I picked up a 6870 for $160 AR. Up until that deal I was going to get a 5870 for $190 AR. They offer great price performance!
