Where do you see yourself in X years?

I answered this question once when I was applying for a position at Woolworths. The interviewer crossed his legs, shifted his body slightly, then looked at me and said, "So, theflyingpig, where do you see yourself in 5 years?". "Well" I said, "I see myself in a cold, dimly lit room. In this room there is a man. He is naked and chained to the floor. His mind and body are broken from years of torture. He whimpers slightly as he sees me approach. He looks a lot like you."

I didn't get the job.

I always answer "Standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door. There is a small mailbox here."

I don't why employers ask such questions when they know they're going to get cliche answers.
