Where do you need me

Since I just upgraded my cooling capacity, I can now run a DC screensaver without crashing my pc. I installed and ran FAH all last night and all day while at work and my temps were fine (cpu 45 celcius, board 35 celcius). Then I turned up the Volcano full blast and the cpu temp dropped to under 40 with full load.

What do I do to join the team and which project needs people the most?

Also, when I get done rebuilding my wife's pc, I'll have her's crunching as well.

Both pc's = Epox mainboard, AMD 1700+ no OC (for now).

You can see by reading the welcome thread at the top of the page there is a lot of dc programs that can use the help. I run TSC and we can use the help but I believe you should read about the different projects and decide which is best for yourself. I run TSC because it is trying to help childen and I believe they need what little help i can give them.
Welcome to team Anandtech no matter which project you choose.🙂

Ok I looked around a bit and found the # 198 so I joined the Anandtech Folding@Home team. I don't think my cpu rocks enough to split time with Seti or something else. Truthfully, the idea of finding something in space intrigues me more, and the screensaver is prettier 😀 but it seems that finding cures for diseases is probably more practical and important, so I think the FAH is the way to go. Plus, Anandtech seems to need more help there as you are a lowly 16th compared to 1st and 2nd on the other projects.

Ok done rambling, off to bed and let the FAH get some cycles in 🙂

Hmm you posted while I was typing. I'll go read up on TSC right now. I can always have the Mrs' pc do that.

If you do run Seti, don't use the GUI (Screensaver) version of it. Work Unit times are much quicker with the command line version.

I strongly suggest that you run chessbrain at the same time as whatever project you decide. chessbrain only uses an hour or two of CPU time per day, so you can get great stats with chessbrain and run another project at the same time and get great results with that project as well! You can a lot of information about chessbrain in this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=39&threadid=1030480

We've moved up in the ranks very quickly, up to #2, and well on our way to #1, but more help is always needed 🙂

Glad to hear you're interested in helping Team AnandTech. 🙂

In Folding@Home, we are actually placed at 22nd right now, and we're going to fall to 28th (at least, if not more) in a few months because our production has been down. If you do decide to help here, we would really appreciate it.

If you do decide to help, IMHO, the GUI client would be a better choice than the screensaver, because it can be pulled up so you can see the pretty graphics when you like. It can then be minimized when you want to do other things with your computer (such as email, word processing, gaming, photo editing, etc.), and it will pick up the spare CPU cycle here and there (typing an email doesn't use much of your computer's CPU power, so F@H will still get 80% or so while you type). Running it all the time like that doesn't cause any problems, because it runs at the lowest priority, so all of your other programs will get any CPU cycles they need. F@H (and practically all other DC projects) will kindly yield and only take up the extras if available.

Entering team number 198 for F@H is the best idea... 😉
You should also pick a unique user name, so you'll get credit when your work units are sent in. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. 😎

I'll most likely switch over to F@H once I reach 20,000 SETI WUs. I think there's a new certificate for reaching 25,000 but with my greatly reduced fleet count, that's just too far away 🙂

Ok, jliechty, I will get rid of the screensaver and use the GUI. The only time I'd really worry about it is when I'm playing UT2003 and from what I've read it won't affect that. That's a crappy game anyhow, who am I kidding 😀 If it wasn't for my teammates I would not even bother with it.

I kept my username as 1sikbITCH, however, if I could change that in my User Profile for this board I would. It's been my gaming name for years but now I don't play very much and am moving away from that. I am not going to re-register, but maybe when I have the money to subscribe I'll change it.

As for the chess thing, I really would probably go for the TSC before anything else, and I'm not ready to start piling them up just yet.

If you ask nicely, then usernames can be changed by the Mods. If you check that what you want it to be changed to isn't already in use, PM Anandtech Moderator and ask if they could please change your username to whatever you want it to be, and hopefully they will do it for you 🙂

ChessBrain is a really nice thing to run as well as whatever other project you choose, because ChessBrain uses hardly any CPU time at all! No more than having an email client open! If you've got a permanent 'net connection, then you can help out the ChessBrain TeAm (TEAMANANDTECH) too 🙂
