In all honesty, on a widescreen monitor, it makes less sense to keep the dock on teh bottom, since Vertical space is at an extra premium, hence the side Dock, you know, where awesome people keep it.
I know that it makes more sense to have the dock on the side, but I just can't get used to having it over there. I keep trying every couple months and just go back to having it at the bottom (small size with magnification). I know it cuts into my horizontal real estate, but it just feels more natural.
I think that's the Windows "Start Menu" embedded in my skull that keeps rearing it's head.
I keep it on the right. Smallest size with magnification turned on and really low so that as i mouse over apps I get just a noticeable little hump. I don't hide it.
That way I can keep the Windows Taskbar on the bottom. The dock is pretty good no matter where you put it, but the taskbar sucks on the sides.
Bottom, small, medium magnification. I've tried it on the side and just can't get used to it. Plus, I don't like what the dock looks like when it's on the side.
bottom. i know it isn't ideal since i have a widescreen monitor. but i still use windows at work and I cant get used to it being somewhere other than where my start bar is.
bottom, ~1/5 size (based on the slider), ~1/2 magnification, hidden.
given that it's hidden, I don't see any argument on space. it's where I'm used to seeing it, and I like the leopard dock look w/ the high contrast backgrounds 🙂
I keep mine at the bottom. Even with a widescreen display, I still find that horizontal space is at a premium. If you use any audio or video editing programs, you know what I'm talking about. The timeline can never be too wide.
I have mine on the right side, as I occasionally use XP through Parallels and I use the convergence view. This enables me to have the XP bar on the bottom and the mac on the side so everything is available.
