yeah, most people here myself included build their own, but if you live near any asian places, a lot of the small asian computer stores can build you a pretty decent system for a pretty cheap price... it's like cell phones and pagers now in china towns, there are so many small little computer stores they have to lowball each other to keep business... so price is usually fair if not good... support would be the onl problem, but from my few experiences, they are pretty good with that too

Dell is probably my favorite large OEM, but like most people here, I build my own.

I built my own, purchasing the parts from all sorts of different vendors (both local and online).

Most of the best prices will be found online, here is a list of places I bought my last system from:

Directron <-- Some of the coolest cases around
ComputerStop
Computer Geeks
Crucial Technologies <-- One of the BEST places to buy RAM, period.
ComputerGate
Buy.com!
Staples Online <-- Pricematch/coupons make this place rule with the right deal!
uBid <-- Occasionally they have GREAT deals on monitors

I think that covers all the online vendors I used to buy my last system. A good place to start looking for prices is Pricewatch. Once you've found a low price, check the rating of the reseller on Reseller Ratings.

Also don't forget to check out the Hot Deals Forum right here on Anandtech.

If you are still clueless as to which components to use, check out reviews on Toms Hardware, Our faithful AnandTech, and Sharky Extreme.

At the moment I can't think of too many other resources I use. I'm sure I'm leaving something out but this should get you started and finished. ;)
