I make them. I've got about 2000 feet of cat6 from a dumpster and I use cat 5 crimpers on it (really tough, but... w/e). It's nice to get the legnths you want whenever you want them.
Check Hot Deals - there are often mail order places where you can get patch cables cheap in bulk. Unfortunately, like all cables, the usual suspect stores have a huge mark up and rip you off badly.
Graybar; they have a local warehouse and customer counter. I usually stop in there every couple of months whenever I'm setting up a new network and need several dozen cables. They have 'em in all colors; I usually get anywhere from 3' to 50' (set sizes of 3', 7', 14', 25', & 50'). Anything other than that, I'll go to somewhere like Home Depot and buy a spool of CAT5 + ends and make it myself.
Look around for a electronic parts outlet store (not Radio Shack tho). If you can find a real one they usually are great for getting the little parts real cheap. There is a store here in Houston called EPO that is great for all the little stuff.
