I have been using napster for a while now but every time they force an update, (you have to update, can't skip it) they fuck it up and I have to uninstall and reinstall.
I am tired of it.

Ruckus, if you're on a campus that subscribes to it.

The music there has DRM, but it's free. I'm willing to deal with DRM if I don't have to pay for the songs (it's ad-supported, but there are hardly any ads anywhere on the site)

Thanks but I wouldn't want to cause a ruckus.

Meh. Wouldn't using smart and Jedi in the same sentence be an oxymoron?

Napster has worked fine for me even with the updates.

Other than napster I buy CDs to rip to lossless FLAC format (then transcode to MP3 or rip again for lossy iTunes AAC).

Paying $1/song for lossy music from iTunes or Amazon is just not my cup of tea. When they offer lossless I'll give them my money.

Mmm, FLAC :) I just wish more audio players supported FLAC natively.

Amazon and iTunes DRM-free are both good. Amazon's service is mostly web based, the only thing you have to install is a lightweight downloading application, which is nice (you can also download individual tracks without installing anything).

There's also eMusic, but it's mostly indie stuff.

iTunes with DRM. I bought most of my stuff before they offered DRM-free, but I'm quitting for the most part. I am really starting to notice the crappy quality compared to my lossless CD rips (I bought em all). Oh, and no way I'm paying an extra $.40 for a slightly better bit rate, that and Apple annoys me.

itunes or amazon are both pretty good AND LEGAL.

Also, if you you like the whole cd, I would suggest buying the cd and ripping a copy to your library. Most swear by lossless, but I can't hear the difference, plus I don't like to clog my iPod with FLAC files. 192kbps VBR High Quality with joint stereo is a great size versus quality middle ground.

I don't look at music in terms of legal and illegal...

Also, looks like Santa didn't bring someone an Author Icon for Christmas. :Q

Suckers? Because they like to support a dying profession as a musician? Because they like to pay a few extra bucks for the hard work and dedication that it takes into making music?
