Where do you buy your steak?

I've really started getting into grilling steak over the last year or so. I'm no fanatic, but I buy decent cuts and put in the time to actually put salt/pepper on, etc.

Where does everyone buy their steak at? I usually just head to QFC and find whatever deals I can, but is this the best/cheapest place to go?

Also, and I know this has been discussed eleventy billion times, but how does everyone grill? I've lately been doing 2 minutes on one side, rotate 90 degrees, let sit for another 2 minutes, one flip, grill for another 4ish minutes, then done. I've also begun feeling the meat with my fingertip to gauge if it's done or not... pretty proud of that!

1. Farmer's market for Prime or local butchers
2. Costco 90% of the time
3. Any other supermarket if I'm desperate.

Waiting for the steak snobs to come rush in tell you to find a butcher shop...

I've always thought the butcher shop was way too overrated. How do you think the supermarkets cut their meat?

This is what I did:
1. Go to nearest Stop & Shop
2. Go to the meat section and press the buzzer that summons the butcher
3. You can have your cut in any way you'd like. I normally ask for a super thick size of prime-grade ribeye at 1.5-2" inches of thickness
4. Bring steak to room temperature
5. Rub canola oil on it for both sides, salt & pepper lightly.
6. In a heat-retaining cast iron pan that's been broiling (500F) in the oven, sear the meat on both sides.
7. Perfect motherfucking steak you'll ever have in your life. Serve with baked potatoe with wine or beer.

In the Metro Detroit area I have found the best place to go for meat that is of highest quality and best price is an otherwise rather "dumpy" local grocery store. Their meat/butcher department is top notch, very clean and extremely cheap. I would like to find a good butcher in my area, but the place I go is close to home and always has a large selection.

Edit... oh yeah, Costco too! :)

Butcher. Build up a decent relationship with one and they'll always give you some of the best cuts, not the ones you see in the case. Same with grocery store butchers but not quite the same.

If you don't see 1.5" then just ask for it. If you can tell how done the steak is by poking it then congrats, you're well on your way.

Maybe you can look up "quality" in the dictionary. The only mainstream supermarkets that I know sell prime is Whole Foods and I imagine Gelson's.

Not your part of town, but If buying steak it's Ray's Prime Meats across from the Southland Mall on Eureka.

My wife has started going to Nino Salvaggio for meat. Where do you normally go?

I must've been deaf & blind when the butcher in Stop & Shop said, "prime grade? good chioce, brb" then packaged me one that read 'prime grade ribeye'.

whole foods butcher
usually hangar steak
cut to 1/2 inch thick (may require cutting at home)
rub salt into both sides
grill on high direct heat: 1 minute each side to sear
grill on med direct heat: 5 minutes each side

total cook time: 12 minutes

ps - keep the grill covered at all times (except for the few seconds required to flip)

I am not familiar with stop & shop so I cannot comment. If you didn't pay 18 bucks or so a pound though I'm gonna go ahead and say you're full of shit. If you did, then disregard that comment.

I buy alternator sized cuts from Costco. IF I go to my ralphs, 1/2 alternator sizes typically run twice as expensive.
