Habitat for Humanity runs stores called ReStore in biggish cities. They are chock full of old construction supplies and other stuff. It is like a thrift store except it is full of cool stuff only, although I have been to a couple that did have a bit of general merchandise too.

Interesting. That's a good lead, so thanks.

He didn't understand that automobile parts would yield him the same scrap metal he was looking for.

As far as wood most lumber centers will let you take something like a 6" scrap for free (just show up on a busy weekend when they are cutting) and have low cost pricing on 1' and longer pieces. I have picked up half a 2x4 for like 50 cents.

You could also put in a CL post ASKING for different parts/items. You may have someone who is sitting on a lot of this stuff see your post and want to get rid of it. Just a thought.

Lots of other good thoughts on this thread as well.

Most of the big salvage guys list stuff there. I even haggle of the listed price too!!!

Just got six interior pieces for my mustang build on there for 100 bucks.

The salvage yard in the town where I went to college sold to the public. It was great. Acres and acres of twisted metal and all sorts of great stuff, all available for $0.15/lb.

I wish there was a public salvage in my area.

Either they were never around enough to get popular, or Craigslist killed them off.
