Where do old computers go to die?

What are companies doing with those year-old computers nowadays? I remembers a while back (when I worked in the private sector) that "e-waste" was a big problem and would continue to be a big problem. anyone have any horror stories of getting rid of old computers or monitors?

My story: 3 years ago I had to carry about 25 oooooollllldddd machines across town to illicitly dump into someone else's dumpster because my company could not afford to pay for them to be disposed of properly. That suuuuucked - in the end my hands were cut and my arms were sore from lifting the old steel-framed pieces of crap.

if you are interested only in the discussion topic, stop here. If you are a kind soul who wants to donate a computer, continue...

*I told you that story to tell you this one* My non-profit is looking to expand our intern staff two fold, meaning we have an immediate need for 4 or more pretty decent computers. For my sake, since I am *that guy* who not only does grantwriting and filing as well as fixing every damned computer problem in my office because no one else will pause to think about their problems themselves, I am looking for computers that will run XP decently well. They wil be used for internet and word processing. We give tax credit for given computers.

****bonus conversation topic:***** anyone else hate being the computer guy in your office? Is ctrl-alt-delete THAT hard????

(here's hoping I don't get spanked for the shameless self-plug. I mean, c'mon, i think I started off with a decent conversation piece.)

EDIT: I used "i mean, c'mon in consecutive sentences. Terrible use of the English language. I mean, c'mon...

Haha, this is a repost but there was a post a while back with the big machine that crushed things. Nice video clips.

Well, Fausto *is* online, so no promises! 😛

At the University where I work, we recycle them, and by recycle they put them in this old shed for a year, until some non-profit comes along and takes them.

We've just given 85 Pentium 3-500 MHz machines to a charity which is setting them up in South African townships

OK. you need machines for "internet and wordprocessing" - yet they need to run bloaty XP.

you can internet and word process fine on a crappy old P133, with a light OS...

I'm moving and just decided to get rid of an old Compaq Cyrix-based POS... of course I've already stripped everything worthwhile and it would never have run XP anyway 😛

The problem is that I suck at figuring out networking under any other system. To tell you the truth, I am a terrible computer guy. I am just better than the other folks in my office.

We have probably close to 70 old compaq deskpro pentium 166 systems that we are trying to unload, I mean donate to some unsuspecting charity. No one seems to want them without monitors, tho.

Fair enough 😉

I *hate* networking.

we melt them down into a puddle
yes, we have them destroyed

its a customer information liability thing, the safest way to make sure no customer data is exposed to the public is to destroy the old computers

For the last month or so, my company has been building pallets of computers (200-600 MHz would be my guess), which mysteriously disappear after a couple weeks of sitting in the hallway...only to be replaced by another pallet, which is slowly built, until it disappears also. This has gone on for at least 4 pallets now.

I wish I knew what they did with them...just today, I saw a new-ish looking Sony Trinitron 20" CRT sitting on top of the current pallet, which I would have grabbed right then and there if I knew it was OK and I wouldn't lose my job 😛. Would make a great replacement for my current monitor.
