Where Do Insects Go In The Winter Time?

Here in Ohio, there are virtually no insects visible from around October to about April, which is probably a good thing. Basically when the weather is below 75 -> few insects. Below 60 -> no insects.

Anyway, I've always wondered where the insects go when it's not hot out. Obviously, they are not migrating like the birds are. But where do they go?

Some migrate, most have a short life cycle so they some just procreate and die in the off-season.

I believe the hives: ants and hornets, semi-hibernate, right?

I remember reading this in an Imponderables book (if anyone else knows what I'm talking about). Most of them die.

If they procreate, then die in the off-season, where do the babies go? Do they die too? Thus making themselves ... extinct?

Most insects live in their larval or egg states during the winter months. Keep in mind that most insects do not spend the majority of their lives in the adult state.

They lay eggs and die. The babies hatch in the spring and you have a new generation of creepy crawlies.
