Where do I start?

I know PCs, I've used them and built them for 20 years. But I've never needed networking, thus no clue.

I have DSL into my house, currently connected from modem to computer with network cable. My kids are always using the connection, we want to set up a wireless system, just for internet access, so I'm thinking that G would be good enough?

We'll have two PCs and one laptop. I plan on keeping the PC next to the modem wired and connecting the laptop and other PC wirelessly. The laptop came from a cousin and it has a Linksys G card already.

So, do I only need a wireless router and a receiver card for the other PC? I'm thinking of staying with Linksys but I've seen some comments about the Asus router that Newegg has a rebate on. Since I know nothing about networking I'm inclined to stay with the big name, but should I worry about that? Will lesser name receiver cards work as well? Will lesser name routers be as easy to setup for someone with no experience?

Two more questions. First, if I have a 2.4 ghz wireless telephone will the 2.4 ghz network interfere with it?

Second, I've read about print servers. Do I need to have a print server in order to print remotely from another PC? Or if the printer is connected to the wired PC can I access it from the wireless PC as long as the wired computer is turned on?

Thanks for helping me out, it's a whole new world.

if vista is in you future and since you have not had any experience with networking and wireless, but you do have dsl [i assume thru the phone service] service i would suggest you call your dsl provider and get a wireless modem/router, it is to easy to setup up and works great, they sent me the 2Wire unit and my speeds went up, i am using 2 vista pc's as of today with xp laptops and no problems i have found.

blazer and Jack, thanks for the information. There is an AT&T modem/wireless router that they recommend, it's $80 on their website. But I think I'll try the Asus router since I have the modem.

If you come back to this thread, two questions

First, any problems with a 2.4 ghz router and a 2.4 ghz wireless phone?

Second, are PCI wireless cards equal? Can I just go for a cheap one or should I spend the money on a brand name? The Linksys G PCI card is $40.

Thanks again.

This is very good, inexpensive, and netter than most of the so called "Brand Names"*.

2.4GHz Cordless phone can be a problem.

After you get the Wireless if it is a problem you can always get inexpensive 5.8GHz phone.

*Brand name is a vendor that uses the same OEM Hardware as everybody else.

What make it "Brand Name" is the large sum of money that it spend for meaningless marketing Ploys.

Thanks for taking the time to educate me Jack. I've got some reading to do but I'm getting the Newegg order ready for the recommended hardware.
