Where do I go from here?

Something, (maybe me), killed my DFI Lanparty. I have treid pretty much everything and cannot get it to work. I currently have a 3000+ that works (at least it used to), RMAing a x2 3800 that I JUST bought from Newegg for a repplacement (It ran hot at stock, was unstable, then mobo died), 1GB of Kingston Value Ram, OCZ Modstream 450 (RMAing because x2 3800 would power off and on with it, but not a new PSU.). I don't want to build a brand new comptuer just yet, waiting for the end of next summer.

I use the computer for mostly gaming and some regular school type things as well. Do a lot of multi tasking when I game, Vent, Itunes, a movie, firefox, torrents d/ling, This killed my 3000+, and playing mostly WoW at 1024x768 I felt CPU limited (The evening or two when the x2 3800 worked I got ~10-20 more FPS =D ). The graphics card is only a 6600 (non GT).

Do I buy a new 939 mobo, or go AM2, sell what I can (the two CPUs and mobo (as it is, broken)). I just want to enjoy WoW and the occasional FPS at a decent fps until next fall when I go to a different college and have time to raid at night. I don't really want to spend that much ~$100-200 and would most likely be getting parts from For Sale/Trade here and other forums, and maybe some rebate deals. What option is best?

mobo is cheapist but you are spending money for know return. You could try explaining your situation to newegg and see if they will let you swap the x2 3800 for an am2 chip (they might especially if you buy the am2 board from them). Then you would just need a board and some ddr2 (2gigs can be found for around $60 if you look hard enough).

Thanks for that answer, more along the lines of what I wanted to hear.
The only 939 boards left on Newegg are Foxcon and Biostar, something when I built long ago were to be avoided, so I would have to find a used one from FS/T or buy a "cheap"? one.
AFAIK Newegg won't swap for me
No. We do not exchange RMA items for different items. We will only replace an RMA'd item with a an identical replacement item of the same make and model. If the return policy period for a refund has not yet expired, you can request an RMA Refund (subject to 15% restocking fee), order a new item, and we'll refund your original purchase after we receive your returned product.
However, I will use their online chat to ask after I get home from work.

I was thinking about the whole AM2 thing, if I could swap CPUs (Even with the 15% restocking fee (CPU is out of return date) if they let me swap), would it give me a decent performance increase going for
AM2 Board - $60?
CPU - Maybe $10 for the fee?
2GB RAM - $60-80 (Or could go with 1GB for ~40ish?)
So less than 200 for AM2 compatibilty, could grab a x2 6000 or however high they go, once the new socket is mainstream, and keep that computer running decently well as a backup / light gaming thing.

Also, worth it to hop on 6600gt deal in Hot Deals and try to sell my 6600, or just save the money and wait until next fall to get something much more beast.

going to a 6600gt from an 6600 probably doesnt make sense. One thing I forgot to check you 6600 is pcie express right (as I dont know if there are any am2 boards that have agp)?

chaudx, I also lost my MSI Neo4 SLI (well, I thought I did, but turned out it was the 1st SLI slot).
I bought a Biostar 6100-M9 open-box from the egg, and it's definitely one of those "you get what you paid for"..
Similarly, MSI wanted $35 for the shipping of the RMA - which I told them, I'd spend the money elsewhere - no thank you and good bye.

I'd try the AT - For Sale forum for a good used 939 if I were you.

BTW, don't bother w/ AM2 - the tards at AMD is gonna change CPU socket again!

If I were building one today, I'd go with Intel C2D 775

Okay, so I talked like a jerk and got Newegg to allow me to return my x2 3800 939.

So that leaves me with a dead board, 3000+ that works, 512mb of spare ram (put 512 in my lolvista machine 2600 barton GO. 1.5gb of ram helps a bit, going to try beta sp1 thing as well as new drivers tonight). To top all of my problems off, my NEC 3550a died (previously RMAed a 3450a to newegg for failure.)

Things are not going well.

I am thinking get some FS/T or hot deal AM2 stuff. The 6600 is PCI express.
For now, thinking FS/T for all the stuff, unless I can get it cheap AR.
My reasoning for going AM2 is that I can grab an end of life 6000+ in 6 months to a year for a nice price, and keep that computer as backup / light gaming. Going to do a new build either fall of '08 or '09 depending on what the CPU market is looking like at that time, if quad core becomes mainstream / expected performance of those new fancy codenamed cores in 09 or not...

So I at least need a new AM2 mobo, AM2 processor, and DDR2 RAM, might get a new DVD burner, and I am still debating on the graphics card.

Any other good sites besides AT and Hard?

bigpow, yes they are going to am2+ and am3, but supposedly the new chips will be backwards compatable wth am2 (just at a lower hyper transport, at lest until later next year when they move to ddr3)

yo its not your board. although that board is a 2nd tier quality board nomatter what people say. it is the combination of that board and the VALUERAM. DFI is a 2nd tier mb company and couldn't get their mb's to work with valueram. i've owned that exact board and ram and i'd get BSOD's. i ended up getting new 2 x 1gb of OCZ platinum ram and reformatted and it worked fine. even though it worked, i still returned the DFI LP board to newegg for full refund + shipping

It is definitely not the RAM lol. I have been over it on 3 forums, and the conclusion is a combo of things. PSU went bad, AS5 wiped up near (possibly got in) the socket, CPU ran very hot to begin with, ect.

Before I got it, the 3000+ and my 1 kingston value ram, 1 patriot with different timings ran in dual channel at 1t, value ram timings, and allowed for a ~200 mhz OC on the 3000+ which was good enough at that time.

Looking at parts quickly tonight I guess

EDIT: Sigh, rebates all have last day as tomorrow. Am I going to get screwed if I buy tomorrow because of that?

So far so good? I can sell my 6600 hopefully for $20 shipped =( and get a little more fps.

its def NOT your ram. your ram is 100% working, its the motherboard that makes it self incompatible with valurram. i'm 99% sure thats ur problem

Wow, looking at mobos makes my head hurt now. Used to be sub $100 DFI or epox would be solid, now neither of those options exist.
Anyone have advise for a cheaper mobo that can run the RAM I linked?

Yes, that's why they're so cheap. It's a closeout sale. :)

Posts in the hot deals thread says the mobos work fine.

no way that hurt your cpu, something else is the culprit. how do you watch a movie and game at the same time? besides the gaming what you are explaining is pretty low cpu power stuff, there is something else going on here.

for a low priced skt939 board i have had good luck w/ asus a8n5x - have had a couple running from opterons through dcs and have no issues. currently running 2 and again, no issues whatsoever and one is on 24/7/however long it goes before ms makes it do a reboot.
