Where do I go from here? Upgrade questions

This is what I have and it works great but I was wanting to upgrade and get ready for Quake 4.

Pentium 4 3.0 with Aero cooling Fan
Asus p4C800-E Deluxe motherboard
1 Gig of DDR 400 PC3200
BFG 6800GT OC
Seagate Barracuda 200GB 7200rpm ST3200822A Drive
Antec metallic ATX chassis SLK3700AMB
Sony DVD R/RW
Antec Truepower 430

Dell 2005 FPW

I was thinking about getting a 7800GTX but I might as well go PCI-E since everything seems to be heading that way. Is anything worth keeping or should I just go all new (besides the monitor) I am not rich but I know new stuff is'nt free.

If you want to do that, I would wait until AMD bring out their M2 socket format next year. Buying a new CPU/MoBo now, when you already have a good system, is going to be a waste of money.

If you have money that you need to get rid of, then yes, get a new motherboard and cpu. If on the other hand, you have to expend effort for the money (work), the system you have is just fine.
I'd wait to see what quake 4 needs hardware wise before the upgrade. What if you buy a A64 3500 now and discover that Quake 4 works a lot better with a fule injected intel P6? (Ok, so it will never happen, but still...)

The good thing is I don't work, the bad thing is because I don't work I don't have alot of money.

I seen this system for sale here and wondered what kind of difference I would see between mine and this one, and if that would be a worthy upgrade or a waste of money?

Athlon 64 4000+ E Core, retail cpu with box/fan, but comes with thermaltake venus 12 HSF
4x512MB sticks of Corsair XMS 3200XL DDR PC3200 2-2-2 RAM...two sticks are pro (with LED's), two sticks are not.
A8N-SLI Deluxe, with swiftech chipset cooler installed.
Evga Geforce 7800GTX PCI-E video card
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card
NED ND-2500A DVD-RW drive flashed to the latest firmware
Maxtor 250GB 7200 RPM SATA hard drive
2x WD2500JD Western Digital 250GB 7200RPM drives in RAID 0
Black Chenming case with black floppy drive.

Thats a very nice system, but if you buy it you won't be astounded at the performance because your currant system is pretty fast. If benchmarks are your thing, then yes you will see an improvement.
If the money is burning a hole in your pocket then upgrade. If your looking for real value save it untill you need to upgrade.

Honestly, your system should run fine. It's not like Quake 4 is going to require dual core or some crazy CPU requirement that doesn't exist yet. Like Greenman said, whatever you upgrade to, you won't get an "OMG THIS IS SOOO FAST!!!" performance bump.

My advice: Try Q4 when it's out. If your system isn't good enough for you, try upgrading memory and the vid card.

Sounds good, thanks for the replies. Will I notice a difference in more memory? What video card can I upgrade to? I actually like my system to be honest but ever since I got this monitor it strains alittle more since I have to run it at 1680x1050.

Most games (Except Battlefield 2) won't hit 1GB mem use, but more never hurts. The only upgrade from your current card would be a 6800 Ultra or an X850 XT. The 7800 series is not availble in AGP (PCIe only), so you'd need to upgrade to a newer mobo for that.
