I've googled, and come up with various sites that say they'll do it for prices ranging from 20$ to 300$.

Obviously I think that it's simply a scam.

Anyhow, new years is fastly approaching, and I need to get a Russian Visa ASAP.

Russian Embassy or Consulate if a visa is necessary. I have no knowledge of that.

Go to Washington DC, and apply in person. I had to get a visa to go out of the US about 4 years ago and that's what I did. They approved it the next day.

What those Visa applications places do is send an official letter of invitation to you, basically saying that they will host you/they have business with you, blah blah blah. I believe hotels can give you the same letter but it can get complicated. I've been to Russia as part of a tour twice and we got ours through Intourist , the travel agency.
