Where do I find the 3D maps that they show on weather newscasts?

I'm looking for a SoCal map to be specific.

I found photos of small areas at Nasa, but no widespread map.

Following a Nasa link, I found an ftp site from usgs that had some strm stuff. Which I don't know what it means or how to open it.

So if anyone knows of a link or a product name, please let me know.

The US Geographical Service has map data called DTED (Detailed Terrain Elevation Data).

Many commercial mapping companies use this data to generate your 3D maps displays.

Delorme is one.

Do a search for Geographical Mapping Terrain and see what pops out that you can use.

Thanks EagleKeeper, that's more than what I was hoping for.

I can see countless sleepless nights ahead of me now. I'll tell my wife it was your fault!
