I need some help locating fish sauce. I'd never heard of it until looking up Thai recipes I'd like to try out. I can order some online, but I'd rather buy locally if possible. We have Wal Mart, Reasors, Food Pyramid (Albertson's), etc around here.
Any help?
I called the local stores but it seems like all they know how to do is pick up a phone and say "Hello, thanks for calling *name of store*" The help ends there.

Get a fish and throw it into the food processor, the juice coming out is the fish sauce.
or
You can go to a Thai restaurant and ask to buy some fish sauce.

they can be found online, look for fish sauce or nuoc mam (vietnamese name for it).

check any asian supermarkets in your area. you can usually find one in big cities. fish sauce is also used in vietnamese cooking as well. (also called nuoc mam) some great stuff can be made with it, but beware, if you use too much it will ruin your food and make it taste bad. make sure you don't overdo it with this stuff. it also does not have a very pleasing smell

a little OT, but i remember when i was little, my big brother filled a supersoaker up with fish sauce and took out one of his friends with it. now this was a big kid, and he just started crying, ROFL

but yeah, with great power comes great responsibility ;)

find a thai restaurant and ask them- sometimes such restaurants will also have a small section of goods for public sale.

If there is an Asian grocery selling the stuff in my area of Alaska, it seems like you should be able to find a similar store wherever you are.

A co-worker did warn me to let her buy the steamer I was interested if I decided to go through with the purchase from them, since I would possibly be charged more as a Gwailo.

Go find the local asian market. If you're in a big city you might even have country specific markets (e.g. thai market).

I've bought Fish sauce from Cub Foods and from Jewel before. (Jewel is owned by SuperValu. Same company that owns Albertsons.)
If the grocery store has an Asian section, just go look there, it shouldn't be too far from the soy sauces.

That said, you will probably find better selection and prices at an Asian market.

I get mine at a local Asian market but a lot of large chain food stores like Price Chopper will also have it.

Mmmm...Thai food...

Even your regular american grocer stores should have them if they're big ones like Stop n Shop.

Or check your small Asian places, they're everywhere. I can name like 5 around me within 20 mi radius. And there are probably 100 of those of the ones I do not know.

I've never had a problem finding it at regular grocery stores. Right next to the soy sauce.
But if you have an Asian grocery, you'll probably get a much bigger bottle for the same price.

you can get fish sauce at ralphs/albertsons/wal-mart, however, it's the generic brand, not so tasty, too fishy fish sauce.

if you have an asian market nearby (don't know how many you have in oklahoma...) you will find a lot more. try to find the one that has a squid on it (i think it's called squid.) tastes much better, not so strong fish smell.

THIS is a good brand. ;) But yeah, most big grocery stores should have it. As mentioned already, even Cub Foods has it in their ethnic selection aisles.
