Where do car companies get off calling station wagons "SUVs" and "Crossover vehicles"?

This whole "crossover vehicle" thing is a bunch of BS. They're just a bunch of station wagons with a 2" higher ride height.

They can call them anything they want, and they'll call them whatever gets people to buy 'em. It seems to be working.

I don't see very many Toyota Matricies or Subaru Outbacks. Must not be selling that well, BigSmooth

Are you serious? Here in the Pacific NW, it seems like every other vehicle is an Outback or Forester. I see a lot of Matrix/Vibes as well.
Other "crossovers" like the Toyota Highlander/Lexus RX, Honda Pilot, Nissan Murano etc. also seem to be popular.

Maybe something in the water here makes people extra-susceptible to marketing doublespeak? :p

That's just being smart.
Do you want the stigma of driving a station wagon?
Even the word minivan has become a bad word.

An SUV is a stationwagon. The only difference is the truck base and the taller height from the ground. I frequently call them Stationwagons Upon Vaults. Try this: take a photo of a stationwagon and move the wheels down lower: suddenly it looks EXACTLY like an SUV.

This is true of the smaller and midsized "car-utes" but the big behemoths are truck based.

Driving an SUV/station wagon is not a bad thing, I'd rather drive something that handles like a car than a truck.

I think they do it so they don't have to meet car safety standards. The light truck standards are much easier to meet for both fuel economy and safety (side impact beams, etc.)

I see the Matrixes (Matrices? Matrix's?) all the time in San Diego and surrounds, but not that many Subarus in general.

Good thinking.
Congress is bumping around the idea of raising the CAFE standards for light trucks again.

I like the Pacifica (despite Celine's commercials). I think it looks pretty good if a bit squat. Certainly looks a heck of a lot better than the old full-size station wagons of old, remember those?

My idea of a SUV? 60's era Ford Broncos.

How so? They're unibody vehicles that share much of their underpinnings with the Camry. Toyota has body-on-frame SUVs like the the 4Runner for people who want/need towing capacity and offroad ability.

The Highlander/RX might be a little less of a glorified wagon than some of the competition, but not by much. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, carlike SUVs are a better choice for most people, but let's not kid ourselves into thinking any of these car-based SUVs can withstand the same workload and punishment as their truck-based counterparts.

Go somewhere cold - Outback is very popular in states where AWD is a desired feature.
